Why put so much effort into learning Dota 2 when all your friends play LoL? It was already late though, and the game had a much steeper learning curve than LoL, it was a hard sale to make. Then Riot went all in on Korea, taking advantage of the players' familiarity with top-down RTS games and their love for grinding, and they provided a professional circuit structure similar to what Brood War had.Īt this time, Valve preferred a hands-off approach for managing their games, and they did the same in Korea by letting Nexon handle it. Worse than that, Blizzard mishandled the esports side of the game. SC2 floundered, most of the top Brood War players didn't bother transitioning to the new game. Meanwhile, WC3 was huge in China and all of Asia, and thus they also got hooked on Dota 1. With few WC3 players, there were even fewer Dota 1 players. WC3 was relatively small in Korea compared to Starcraft, two RTS games that were direct competitors. I'm glad to just see more genres of multiplayer gaming, instead of FPS and MMOs.It's a complex issue, but I'll try to make it short: I'm sure there's more, but both games are great and have caused Mobas to come into their own. Gameplay is less complex (let's not argue about this, I haven't played much, I'm speaking from a relatively ignorant standpoint- but you can't deny, I know that much!) There's a huge gap in popularity and I believe the key reasons have been stated in previous posts.Ĭharacters have wider range of appeal IE: Cuteness, Beauty Only 1 person there (at least, that decided to speak up) had even played Dota. Out of the 30 or so competitors in the tournament, it seemed that 25 or so play LoL regularly, or at least somewhat often. They seemed somewhat interested, but the sheer number of people that play LoL on a regular basis was overwhelming. I advocated at least giving it a shot, gave them a rundown of why it's my favorite game, and how it differs in some very key ways from LoL. Only a handful of people had heard of it, much less played it. Things like "laning and warding" and being an avid Dota player, I asked if they were talking about Dota. To add a fun little story: I went to a SSBM tourney the other day nearby Cal Berkeley campus, and overheard some moba-esque talk.
